SUMMARY: Provide effective American Sign Language interpretation to facilitate communication and educational access for Deaf or hard-of-hearing students in the school setting.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide interpretation using American Sign Language (ASL) of classroom instruction, discussions, questions, assignments, announcements, assemblies, field trips, extracurricular activities, and other school-related activities.
Facilitate communication between Deaf or hard-of-hearing students, teachers, staff, peers, and other individuals to ensure the student has meaningful access to instruction and school activities.
Communicate with educational staff regarding communication access, environmental factors, and other concerns that may affect the student’s ability to participate in classroom activities, while referring to educational and instructional decisions to the appropriate school personnel.
Utilize appropriate interpreting techniques and communication methods based on the student’s age, language abilities, educational setting, and individual communication needs.
Support the development of an inclusive classroom environment by facilitating communication and encouraging the students’ appropriate participation and independence.
Prepare for interpreting assignments by reviewing relevant instructional materials, terminology, schedules, and other information necessary to provide effective communication access.
Document all services accurately and within established timelines in accordance with Easterseals policies and regulatory requirements.
Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, agency policies, and ethical standards.
Comply with school policies and procedures while adhering to Easterseals policies.
Develop and maintain positive, professional relationships with teachers, administrators, and related service providers to promote the student’s educational participation and positive student outcomes.
Participate in ongoing professional development and maintain professional competence in American Sign Language (ASL), interpreting techniques, deaf education practices, and communication strategies through continuing education and professional development.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited interpreter training program.
Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Must have proof of auto insurance.
A criminal background check must meet the requirements of the State of Ohio
Drug and alcohol testing per company policy and safety program.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL), interpreting techniques, Deaf culture, and communication methods used with individuals who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
Knowledge of educational environments, classroom procedures, and the unique communication and learning needs of Deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
Adjust communication and interpreting techniques based on the student's age, language proficiency, communication style, and individual needs.
Remain flexible and able to adapt to changing classroom environments, schedules, instructional approaches, and student needs.
Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements.
Display a high level of motivation and a self-imposed standard of excellence.
EQUIPMENT USED/MACHINERY REQUIREMENTS:
Proficient use of standard office equipment, Microsoft Office, applicable software programs, and other technology required to perform assigned duties.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 25 pounds occasionally.
Frequently requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, squatting, kneeling, reaching, and a full range of body motion.
Potential exposure to blood and body fluids and communicable diseases.
FLSA Status – Non-Exempt – $20 - $25 per hour, based on experience Classification – Per Diem/not to exceed 19 hours per week
