SUMMARY:
Easterseals of Northeast Ohio is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented team player to serve as the full-time Controller. The right candidate will provide financial leadership and oversight while supporting the organization’s mission and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of its financial operations. This position will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Controller provides leadership and oversight of the organization's financial operations and serves as a key member of the administrative team. This position ensures that Easterseals maintains sound financial practices, accurate information, and effective processes to support the organization's mission and day-to-day operations.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee the day-to-day financial operations of the organization and ensure accurate and timely financial records.
- Supervise, train, develop, and evaluate accounting and office administration staff, providing direction, support, and accountability.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial, employee, donor, client, and organizational information.
- Manage and review accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, cash disbursements, and general ledger activity.
- Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, adjustments, and other accounting transactions.
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements and reports for the CEO, leadership team, and Board of Directors.
- Monitor financial performance against budget and prior periods, identify significant variances, and communicate areas requiring attention.
- Assist with the development of the annual organizational budget and monitor budget performance throughout the year.
- Monitor cash balances, cash flow, and accounts receivable to support the organization's ongoing financial needs.
- Oversee billing, collections, reimbursement, and revenue tracking, including Medicaid, insurance, grants, contracts, and other funding sources.
- Review contractual adjustments, denials, and write-offs to ensure appropriate documentation, authorization, and accounting treatment.
- Coordinate the annual financial audit and prepare or oversee preparation of required schedules, reports, and supporting documentation.
- Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, organizational policies, funding requirements, and applicable regulations.
- Maintain effective internal controls and recommend improvements to strengthen financial accuracy, accountability, and efficiency.
- Oversee payroll accounting and ensure payroll transactions and related expenses are accurately recorded.
- Maintain the organization's accounting system, chart of accounts, financial records, and supporting documentation.
- Prepare financial reports and information requested by the CEO, Board of Directors, auditors, funders, and other authorized parties.
- Work collaboratively with program and administrative staff to address financial questions, resolve issues, and improve financial processes.
- Comply with school policies and procedures while adhering to Easterseals policies, clinical standards, and Medicaid requirements.
- Develop and maintain positive, professional relationships with community partners, vendors, funders, etc.
- Maintain current knowledge of applicable Ohio Medicaid, Ohio Department of Behavioral Health, Ohio Department of Aging, Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, and CARF requirements.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and maintain required certifications, licensure, and competencies as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field required.
- CPA, MBA, or other relevant professional certifications preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting or financial management experience, including nonprofit experience preferred.
- Experience with government-funded programs, Medicaid, healthcare reimbursement, grants, or other third-party reimbursement preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with financial statement preparation, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, audit coordination, internal controls, and financial analysis.
- Experience supervising accounting or finance staff.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, financial management, budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and their application within nonprofit organizations.
- Ability to evaluate the financial sustainability of programs, contracts, reimbursement arrangements, and organizational initiatives.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to identify financial risks and opportunities and communicate them clearly to the CEO and Board.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines in a small, fast-paced nonprofit environment.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment while also collaborating effectively with organizational leadership.

EQUIPMENT USED/MACHINERY REQUIREMENTS:
- Proficient use of standard office equipment, Microsoft Office applications, applicable software programs, and other technology required to perform assigned duties.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, squatting, kneeling, and reaching.
- May occasionally require lifting, carrying, or moving office materials, files, or supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
FLSA Status – Exempt – $70,000 - 80,000 per year
